Like all jewelry, it requires a bit of care to keep your Pixie Dots creation looking its best! The care of your particular piece of jewelry will depend on the metal used in your creation:
- Sterling silver – Sterling silver is a valuable metal due to the inclusion of silver in the metal compound. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of silver is that it tarnishes as a result of contact with the air. Therefore, you should always keep your sterling silver jewelry in an airtight bag. Nothing fancy is needed - a regular airtight plastic bag will do the trick. If you keep your jewelry in an airtight bag, you will only need to clean it a couple times a year. There are excellent silver cleaners you can buy at the grocery store; look for one with an anti-tarnish agent. Simply rub the polish on and use a soft sloth to rub it in. Then rinse off and dry with a soft cloth. Use a polish pad to buff it up even shinier and you're good to go!
- Nickel silver, bronze, pewter or aluminum, nu gold – Nickel silver, bronze and aluminum have no inherent value in the metal as they do not contain any silver in the metal compound. The advantage of this lack of silver is that the metal will not tarnish. So, cleaning is as simple as buffing with a polish pad!
- Copper - Copper jewelry is quick to tarnish, but the good news is that it is easy to clean and restore to its original shine. Just mix a solution of warm water, a few drops of lemon juice and a teaspoon of salt. Dip the tarnished copper into the solution and leave it there for a couple of minutes. Remove the jewelry and rinse thoroughly. Repeat if some tarnish still shows. Dry and buff with a polish pad and its good as new!
